Picture
June is coming to an end and what a month this has been for Hocus Pocus fans!

This month saw the release of a brand new Movie Moments Pop at Spirit Halloween in the USA and the very first teaser trailer and posters for Hocus Pocus 2.

As we creep closer to Hocus Pocus 2, October and Halloween 2022, the next few months are guaranteed to be bursting with spooky surprises and of course Hocus Pocus merchandise!

All of the below finds are from small businesses and as always, links are included with each post!

Binx Acrylic Pin

Picture
If you love Binx the cat, you'll love this!

This pin is made from clear acrylic and has Binx standing in front of a bright moon and purple clouds/smoke.

Measuring approximately 1.25 inches, this would look great on any outfit this Halloween! You can also pick up a matching Dani pin and sticker from this store too.

To grab yours just click here.

Hocus Pocus Ice Cream Pin

Picture
Summerween officially started this month and what better way to add a spooky touch to these long, warm summer months than with this ice cream pin!

This isn't just any ice cream pin though, this is a Sanderson Sisters glittery pin that is guaranteed to add a little magic to your summer outfits.

The pin features Mary, Wini and Sarah on top of a sundae glass thats filled with ice cream. Spell is also written across the front of this 1.77 inch pin.

I really like this pin, mainly for the fact it's so different to what we usually see for a Hocus Pocus inspired pin and with Summer in full swing, this really is such a great pin to celebrate the warmer months with the Sanderson Sisters.

You can pick up this pin right here.

Hocus Pocus Square Prints

Picture
I came across the third product on todays list only this morning and instantly fell in love with them.

These Hocus Pocus prints are available in four different designs and feature Sarah, Mary, Wini and Billy in different scenes from the film.

Each print measures approximately 8 inches by 8 inches and you can purchase each design individually or as a set of four for a lower price.

I absolutely love each design but if I had to pick, Billy is definitely my favourite from the four.

You can pick up these prints right here.

Sistahs Pin!

Picture
The third and final pin on todays list is this Sistahs! Pin.

The pin, as the name suggests, features a silhouette of the three Sanderson Sisters against a bright yellow circle. They're also surrounded by glittery stars and the moon. "Sistahs!" is written across the front in glittery text too.

This pin would pair really well with the Binx pin mentioned above. Measuring approximately 3 inches wide, it's definitely not a small pin but is perfect for any fan.

Grab your very own pin right here.

Hocus Pocus Patch

Picture
One thing I am really looking forward to over the next few months is all of the fan merchandise that will be created.

This Hocus Pocus embroidered patch features the Hocus Pocus 2 title text. Although there is no '2' with the text for the sequel film, this is still a great patch for those looking forward to the sequel and would be great to add to your collection too. The patch measures approximately 2 inches x 2 inches and has an iron-on backing.

You can pick up your very own Hocus Pocus patch right here.

Hocus Pocus: Exploring The original Script! Part 2

7/12/2021

Picture
Part two of exploring the original Hocus Pocus script is here and once again it's bursting with all kinds of alternate and deleted scenes, different lines and more!

Part 1 ended right when the kids were about to enter the Sanderson Sisters house and so let's pick up right where we left off and see what changes occur next...

The first change from the script to screen is that in the script, the house sits atop a hill which the kids all climb up to. In the film it appears the house is actually deep in the woods.

They reach the Sanderson House where the old sign sits outside, it's all overgrown and peeling. The sign reads:

Picture
"Sanderson House, circa 1660, Home of Winifred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson. Noon 'til 5:00 p.m. Mon-Sat. Donation 50 cents:

Allison:
"My mom used to run this place, but tourists kept having heart attacks and accidents so they closed it down"

As they approach the house, Binx makes his appearance before they enter.
Max: "It's just a cat"

Allison:
"It's THE cat--the one that warns you!"

The cat begins yowling at them. Max throws a stone at it. There is a yowl of pain, and the cat disappears in the shadows.
Picture
They enter the house using an old key that still sits above the door. When they find the lights inside the witch house, there are three mannequins of the witches huddled around a cauldron. This scares Dani which results in Allison telling Dani "They're just dummies" and Max calling her a dummy.

As they begin to explore the house, Dani stares at the mannequin of Winifred.

Allison:
"That's Winifred. She was the eldest. Her farther was a warlock. This is Mary, the middle sister. Her father was a bloodhound and she could follow the scent of a child for miles. Sarah, the youngest, was strange. She would lure children -- usually young boys --into the woods to play and they'd never be seen again."
Picture
Cut to the return of the witches. in the film Sarah pulls her Lucky Rat Tail from one of the beams above her, in the script she pulls it out from under one of the floorboards. Mary begins to examine the mannequins around the cauldron and calls them clever, which results in Winifred stating they look nothing like her.

Mary: "Well, of course not, sister. They have totally missed that special glow of they skin and the way --"
Winifred hits Mary on the back of the head.
Mary: "I see thy point, sister"

Winifred then smashes the glass cabinet that houses the book with her hands and takes it.
Picture
Another jump to the witches leaving the house after discovering the "burning rain of death" is just water. They're afraid to cross the river (road).

Mary: "What is that?"
Winifred: "'Tis a Ford... Obviously a vessel for fording this river.
Mary: "Winnie's so clever"

They push Sarah into the road who screams "I cannot swim! I cannot swim!"

In the graveyard as Binx is about to tell them the story of Billy Butcherson he asks them all to sit, Max doesn't sit and instead stays standing. Binx: "You too, verge".

We return to the Sanderson Sisters house where they're hiding outside as the firemen leave the building. In the film Sarah pulls a spider from the bush and in the script this spiders fate is a little more descriptive.
'Sarah is blithely plucking the legs out of the spider.'

Sarah: "One little leggy... Two little leggies..."

Mary then snatches the spider from Sarah's hand and swallows it.
Picture
Sarah: "Mary ate my spider!"
Mary: "What spider?"
Winifred then hooks both of their nostrils and brings them closer before explaining what the black flame candle being lit once again means.

Winifred: "The ingredients for that potion are in my spell book, and the little brats have stolen it. So here's the rub. We must get my book back, brew the goo, and steal the lives of chil-dren before sunrise -- or we shall evaporate and never exist again. Hast thou grasped the urgency of our plight?"
Picture
We return to the cemetery where Max is about to try and burn the book. In the film a wind blows out the lighters flame, however in the script, the flame actually turns into a ball and explodes, nearly burning Max's hand off.

Max to Binx: "Why didn't you warn me?"
Binx: "Why did you throw a rock at me?"

The witches appear and above.
Sarah & Mary: "Why didn't you warn me! Why didn't you warn me!"
Winifred: "It's all just a bunch of Hocus Pocus"
Max: "Yo, hags! Get lost!"
Winifred: "Ah, the brave little virgin who lit the candle. (stares into his soul) He misses his friend. He wants to go home"
Mary & Sarah (pretending to cry): "Boo hoo hoo hoo hoo!"
Sarah: "I'll be thy friend"
Allison: "Take a hike!"
Winifred (hates her): "Ah, she's jealous. And isn't she pretty. Almost as pretty as her ancestor, little Elizabeth Podbury, a good witch"
Mary: "Good to the last bite!".
Picture
When the kids are underground in the graveyard. Allison refers to the following Billy as "Mildew Man".  Cut to the witches landing outside the graveyard gates.
Winifred: "They must come out somewhere and when they do, we will get the book and skin them all alive!"
Mary: "A brilliant plan. I wish I thought of it myself"
Winifred: "But first, we must find the other children of Salem"
Sarah: "Why?"
Winifred: "BECAUSE, for the third and final time, my dim witted sibling, when we find the book, we can use the potion to steal ALL THEIR LIVES!"
Sarah: "Oh. Right."
Picture
The bus pulls up beside them and the doors open. When Winifred tells the driver they desire children his response in the script is: "I'd hurry up if I were you. Your biological clock's about to run you down, baby."
He's about to close the door when Sarah steps forward.
Sarah: "Hey, handsome. They're with me"
The witches climb aboard the bus, which is empty.
Bus Driver: "Which witch is which? Excuse me, ladies, this is a magic bus, but I do need a token or its financial equivalent"
Picture
The witches, now off the bus are standing outside as children in costume run up and down the street. Mary thinks she's lost her powers as she can smell children but cannot see them.
Winifred: "What do we desire?"
Mary & Sarah: "Children!"
Winifred: "When do we want them?"
Mary & Sarah: "Now!"
They share a team snarl.
Winifred: "Snake formation" They lean their brooms against the fence and then Winifred begins to mutter a childhood chant, to give them courage.

Winifred: "Satan Loves us, this we know. Because our mother told us so. And when in trouble, be smart, ladies, do not waste time, go straight to hades."
Picture
The Devil then appears on his doorstep howling into the night and the witches all turn and scream "MASTER!" .

Check back next week for part 3!

Twenty Seven Hocus Pocus Facts To Celebrate 27 Years

7/16/2020

Picture
It's been 27 years right down to the day that Hocus Pocus first hit cinemas and what a wonderful 27 years its been!

From box office bomb to one of the biggest Halloween films on the planet, this film has definitely had a bumpy ride along the way.

It was originally released on this day (July 16th) in 1993, with the UK receiving the film during October of the same year. Over the years the film has grown with every Halloween and is even shown multiples times throughout October on tv.

So to celebrate one of the greatest Halloween films ever made, here's 27 bewitching facts for you to sink your teeth into.

Picture
1 - Hocus Pocus was originally created as a story by writer David Kirschner. He would read the story to his children before bed.

2 - Although a Halloween film, it was originally released in July 1993 and didn't perform as well as Disney had hoped. Created on a budget of $28 million, the film ended up making just over $39 million in the end.

3 - Sarah Jessica Parker absolutely loved flying on her broom, so much so that she would often spend hours at a time suspended on her broom while learning her lines.

4 - A scene cut from the film (but available on the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray) features Mary asking if the towns people can check to see if she left her cauldron on before she is hanged. When the Sanderson Sisters return from the dead she exclaims "I knew I left this cauldron on, didn't I tell you!"

5 - Bette Midler has stated that Winifred Sanderson is her all time favourite role she has ever played.

6 - Rosie O'Donnell was originally offered the role of Mary but turned it down as she didn't want to play a scary witch. Kathy Najimy also wanted the role as she was desperate to work with Bette Midler due to being such a big fan.
7 -  Although featured in an original trailer a whole bunch of deleted scenes didn't make it to the 25th Anniversary Blu ray. These scenes include the Sanderson Sisters at the pool, in a supermarket and additional scenes with trick or treaters. They are referenced but the actual scenes are not shown.
Picture

8 - An original idea for the film was that the witches would trick the children by feeding them candy crows. In two deleted scenes (that once again didn't make it to the 25th anniversary blu-ray) we see the Sanderson Sisters at a supermarket buying ingredients for the candy crows and in another we see them handing them out.

9 - The Hocus Pocus sequel book isn't the only official Hocus Pocus book.... a novelisation of the film was released to coincide with the films release and actually features many of the deleted scenes and the candy crow storyline. You can still get your hands on the book from sites like ebay but expect to pay a pretty penny for a copy.

10 - The film has several alternative names. In Mexico and Venezuela it was released as Abracadabra and in France it was known as Hocus Pocus: Les trois sorcières which translates to The Three Witches.

11 - Hocus Pocus takes place on Halloween night in 1993. In the film there is a full moon but in reality there wasn't a full moon that night. The last time it was a full moon on Halloween was in 1974.

12 - Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimi have all agreed to doing a sequel and although there are many rumours of a sequel in production for Disney+, there hasn't actually been any official announcement from Disney themselves.

13 - Thackery Binx was actually played by two different actors. Human Binx was played by Sean Murray while his voice  was from Jason Marsden.

14 - The Sanderson Sisters were hanged in Salem on October 31st 1693. In reality the Salem Witch Trials ended in 1692 and so no hangings would have occurred.
Picture
15 - The scene where Billy cuts open his mouth and moths fly out actually featured real moths. A special mouth rig was created and placed inside Doug Jones' mouth to stop him from swallowing any of the moths. When the time came he was able to breath out enough air to push the moths out of his mouth and create the famous scene.

16 - Towards the end of the film the Sanderson Sisters take flight into the night and Sarah begins to sing (The song's original title is actually Garden of Magic). The scene of all three sisters flying over Salem was actually created using puppets. Each of the sisters were created as miniature puppets on brooms/a vacuum.
Picture
17 - Satan and his wife were played by Penny and Garry Marshall. In real life they were actually brother and sister.

18 - The original title for Hocus Pocus was Halloween House. Early scripts even had this title, it was later changed to the movies name that we all love.

19 - Sarah Jessica Parker discovered that her 10th Great Grandmother was originally accused in Salem of witchcraft in 1692. Esther Elwell was accused of committing "Sundry acts of witchcraft". This was discovered when Parker took part in an episode of Who Do You Think You Are.

20 - The film was originally slated to be a Disney Channel original movie and there were no plans to release it in cinemas. Disney saw potential in the film and wanted to see if it would be a huge hit. Although it has reached cult status over time, maybe releasing the film in October and not July would have ensured it was a bigger hit in 1993...

21 - Real cats were used to play Binx. Kenny Ortega has stated that nine cats were used in total and each one was used for different scenes. An animatronic cat and cgi were also used. Even by today's standards, the effects created to bring Binx to life are still extremely effective.

22 - The song "Almost Unreal" by Roxette was written by Per Gessie as a theme song for Hocus Pocus. It was later scrappe and instead used for the live action Super Mario Bros film. Doesn't really fit at all though does it?
Picture
23 - A mini animated series was released via the official Hocus Pocus Facebook page for the 25th anniversary. The short-lived series is called The Brew and only consists of 5 episodes and they're extremely fun to watch. Personally I had hoped for more episodes the following year but it seems as though Disney has put the animated series to bed.

24 - The colours of Max Dennisons tie-dyed t- shirt all coincide with the colours of the three witches. Red for Mary, purple for Sarah and green for Winifred.

25 - During scenes where there are a large number of children trick or treating, various costumes are actually famous characters from different movies and games. Mrs Potts from Beauty and the Beast, Sonic the Hedgehog and even Michael Myers from Halloween all make a very brief appearance.

26 - In the scene where the witches suck the life force out of Emily Binx, she slumps over and is apparently dead. When the Sanderson Sisters begin to dance you can see Amanda Shepherd, who plays Emily, move a little.

27 - The house that Allison lives in was also used in American Beauty, which also stars Thora Birch. In reality the house is only a few doors down from the real Witch House in Salem.
