Five Ways To Celebrate Halfway To Halloween!

4/30/2020

Picture
The last day of April means one thing... it's officially six months until Halloween! We are now at the halfway point with our constant countdown.

Over the next six months we can expect to see things popping up in stores, new ranges being released, the sequel to 2018s Halloween, Halloween Kills and just about as much spooky goodness as you can handle!

So to celebrate 6 months to go, here's five easy and fun things that you can do today to celebrate getting even closer to the best time of year.

Picture
Plant Pumpkins!

Now is actually the best time to plant your pumpkins within the UK. The colder days and nights are behind us (although it still feels like its winter some nights brrrr) and Summer is on it's way which also means warmer weather.

As the UK weather is very hit and miss late April to the end of May is the right time to get those seeds in the soil. It will give them plenty of time to grow and if the weather is good to us this year, you'll see a nice harvest come October.

If you're in a warmer location and don't have seeds to hand, then fear not as you can wait until as late as July to plant them. For all the ins and outs of pumpkin growing click right here.

Picture
Listen to Music!

This one is an easy one but should definitely get you in the mood for October. Have a little dance party at home with as many spooky songs as you can find. Youtube is bursting with Halloween songs and so many wonderful spooks have also created playlists to help cut out all that searching.

I also created a list of great songs to listen to (with a new one coming very soon!) and if you want constant 365 days a year Halloween music playing then why not check out Halloween Radio? There are five different spooky stations to choose from and it's available all year!

Picture
Spooky Snacks!

There might still be six months to go but it doesn't mean that you can't have a mini Halloween party with lots of spooky snacks. You don't have to head out to the supermarket to make your snacks either. If you've got yourself a Halloween cookie cutter why not cut out spooky sandwiches? If you have food colouring, add it to an easy cake mix to add a creepy twist. There are endless ways to add a Halloween touch to your meals today.

If you're in a making mood though why not make Toffee Apples? or Frankenstein crispy treats or these lovely Candy Corn Cupcakes!

Picture
Watch A Film!

I love watching Halloween films any time of year and today is no exception! In a world where we have Disney+ Amazon Prime and Netflix you don't have to worry about trying to find something to watch either.

If you have Disney+ you can currently watch all four HalloweenTown films, Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas along with other Halloween themed films and if you search Halloween on Netflix or Amazon you're greeted with a whole bunch of spooky films for your eyes to feast on.

Why not watch a Halloween episode from your favourite TV show or throw on a film you already have on and cosy on down under a big blanket. The Halloween episodes from Friends, Cougar Town, Scream the TV Series and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are all worthy of a watch. If you haven't seen a show before then why not start one! It might just become your new favourite show.

Picture
Plan, Plan and Plan!

Now we've hit the halfway mark, let's get planning! Some of you have been planning this Halloween since last Halloween and for those of you who haven't even started, now is the time!

You've got the perfect amount of time to decide on your costume, your party theme, even what treats you would like to put into treat bags. Start planning the food you would like to make, the things you would like to create or even start making a shopping list of what you would like to hopefully buy this year.

There are already thousands of Halloween goodies for you to find online too. So if you're in the mood for a little Halloween shopping then you can very easily trick or treat yourself. Planning for October can be extremely fun and if you really want to go for it, why not create your own book? Fill it with all your favourite Halloween things and then keep adding to it all the time. That way you have your own personal Halloween reference for when you need it more.

Happy Halfway to Halloween!

Seven Spooky TV Shows to Binge Watch (Part 1)

3/27/2020

Picture
As many of us are at home at the moment you might be wondering what to do. You've cleaned the house, organised those cupboards, caught up on any other tasks but now what?

Well it's time to BINGE watch your new favourite show of course. So grab whatever snacks you have, a big blanket and wrap yourself up with these seven TV shows that will help past a few days at least.

Picture
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

This one is worthy of many, MANY Binge watches because honestly Buffy is amazing. Sure season 1 & 2 haven't aged too well but they're still worthy of being watched over and over. Buffy has a total of 7 seasons and 144 episodes with each episode being around 44 minutes each... thats a lot of binge watching to be had.

Plus if you come to the end of all seven seasons and need more of the Buffyverse in your life then also check out the spin off show Angel. Angel has five seasons and 111 episodes in total so you're pretty much all set.

Picture
Six Feet Under

I miss Six Feet Under. I MISS IT! Six Feet Under follows the Fisher family who run a funeral home in Los Angeles and it's all about the ups and downs of family life and everything in between. It's such a brilliant show and so well written that if you have never seen it before it's pretty much guaranteed to become one of your favourites. It also has one of the best TV show endings I have ever seen.

Six Feet Under has a total of five seasons and 63 episodes all running around 55 minutes each.

Picture
The Haunting of Hill House

Hill House was huge when it was first released on Netflix and if you've never seen it, where have you been hiding? If like the many hidden ghosts in each episode you've missed it then now is the time to check this show out. You could easily binge all of this in one day (if you start fairly early that is) so it's not a huge time killer but you'll easily pass the day away. Season One clocks in at a total of 10 episodes all around 50 minutes each.

What's more is that it's already been given a season 2 and just like the next show on the list will be a new anthology show. The Haunting of Bly Manor is the official title for season 2 and will be available 2020.

Picture
American Horror Story

American Horror Story is an anthology show so you don't necessarily need to watch each season in order or even all seasons to get into it. I actually started watching AHS from season 3 and then worked my way backwards.
Each season has a new theme and the same cast but as different characters (with changes here and there) and with nine seasons and 103 episodes this is one show you can binge for sure.

So whether you're interested in ghosts, witches, serial killers, aliens, a travelling freak show, the apocalypse and more, this show has something for everyone!

It's also already been renewed right up to season 13!

Picture
Scream the TV Series

If you're a fan of the Scream films (raises hand enthusiastically) then you'll enjoy Scream the TV Series. It doesn't have the same amount of suspense as the original films but it's worthy of a watch.

Scream has a total of 3 seasons with 30 episodes, the final episode of Season 2 being a two-part Halloween special. Series 1 and 2 follow Emma Duval who is being stalked by a killer who is slowly killing people she knows one by one. Season 3 changes characters and location entirely and you're treated to a brand new story to sink your knives into.

Picture
Ash vs Evil Dead

Ash vs Evil Dead is brilliant! If you're a fan of the original films then you will love this. It follows Ash (Played by Bruce Campbell) who has to fight the Evil Dead once again and save mankind. He has help though with his partners in crime Pablo and Kelly. The show has a total of three seasons and 30 episodes all timing in at around 30 minutes each.

What's makes this show great isn't just the return of Bruce Campbell but it also has other returning characters from the films as well as being created by Sam Raimi who created the original trilogy.

Picture
Goosebumps

As a kid I remember going into WH Smiths with my parents and looking at all of the Goosebumps books, wanting every single one of them. Especially the choose your own adventure books. At the time the TV show was also on TV and although it's no longer running it is still worthy of a watch.

I recently watched episodes of the original show and it's a little cheesy in parts but so much fun. It ran for a total of 4 seasons and and has 74 episodes. When you're done you'll also have the 235 books to read and also the two movies that were released in 2015 and 2018.

So thats seven tv shows to binge watch this week! Keep an eye open for part 2 next week!

Ten Spooky Games To Kill Some Time (and not each other)

3/25/2020

Picture
If like me you're at home right now and can't go out then you'll most likely get a little bored over the next few weeks, so to kill some time (and not each other) here are a bunch of games i've scoured the web for that you can buy right now and play with others you're currently with.

Hopefully these will help you fight boredom and also stay safe at home until all of this is over.

I have included a number of links for each game to give you more options on where to get it and also different prices. If a link doesn't apply to your location, you can still find a lot of these games elsewhere.

Picture
Horrified

Horrified is an official Universal Studios Monsters game where the most iconic monsters are coming for you!

In the game you have to work together to defend the town from Frankenstein, Dracula, Frankensteins Bride, Wolfman, The Mummy, The Invisible Man and The Creature from the Black Lagoon (how cool!). It's aimed at ages ten and up and has an average game play time of around 1 hour.

What's really cool as well is the game includes seven paintable mini monster playing pieces and is suitable for 1-5 players.

You can grab this game right now from Amazon UK, Amazon US, John Lewis and 365 Games.

Picture
Halloween Charades
Who doesn't love Charades? Usually played on Christmas Day, this Halloween edition is perfect for not only October but all year! You'll most likely need a couple of people to play but it's so cheap you and your friends could all order it and play through webcam for now.

The game includes 50 charade cards along with 3 mini certificates for best, worst and the overall winner.

Grab this game from Amazon UK or Ebay.

Picture
The Nightmare Before Christmas Monopoly

This one might be best not to play during lockdown considering how many arguments it seems to cause but you can't deny it's pretty cool right?

The Nightmare Before Christmas Monopoly is the same classic game we've all played before but with a NBC twist. It includes 6 game pieces along with Jack Skellington cash and a Halloween Town themed playing board. Monopoly is suitable for 2-8 players.

You can grab your very own NBC Monopoly from Amazon UK, Amazon US and GAME.

Picture
Stupid Deaths

Stupid Deaths looks like a lot of fun! A lot of dark fun that is... the goal of the game is to guess whether a somewhat stupid death is true or false. You're also being chased by the Grim Reaper and for every correct guess you can move your playing piece a little closer to home, get it wrong and you have to move the Reaper closer to you instead.

If the Reaper catches up with you then it's game over. You do also have extra life cards to save yourself but they're limited.

Stupid Deaths is aimed at 2-6 players and is for ages 12 and up.

Grab Stupid Deaths from Amazon UK, Amazon US and Menkind.

Picture
Bugacula

Bugacula is a short but very fun and very repetitive game so you can easily play this over and over again. The goal of the game is to light as many candles across the board as you can without Bugacula catching you and lure him onto the catapult where you can literally fire him across the board and out of the castle.

It's a fun game that might be a little tricky to set up (there are a lot of pieces) but it's aimed at ages 6 and up so is sure to be a lot of fun!

You can buy Bugacula from Amazon UK, Amazon US and  Smyths Toys.

Picture
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Board Game

If you love Buffy then you will love this game! The goal of the game is to help Buffy and her friends defend the town of Sunnydale from vampires and demons. Oh and the big bad... who once again wants to open the Hellmouth and destroy everything as we know it.

You can use special abilities to fight the demons and also play as various characters from the show including Willow, Spike, Xander and even Buddy herself.

Help Buffy save the day and grab this game from Amazon UK and Amazon US.

Picture
Halloween Twist and Bend

If you've played Twister then you already know how to play this game and if you haven't, it's so easy to play. All you need to do is spin the dial to see where it lands, you then place your left/right hand/foot onto the square that goes with the Halloween symbol.

The more tangled up you get the more likely you are to fall and drop out of the game. This is always a classic game to play throughout the year and loads of fun. The fact that it has a Halloween twist is even better too!

Grab your very own Twist and Bend game from Amazon UK, October 31st and Party Avenue.

Picture
Stack the Bones

Another game that is similar to a classic game is Stack the Bones. If you have played Jenga then you'll know what to do. The goal of the game is to remove a piece from the stack and place it on top. The higher it gets and the more pieces placed on top the more likely it will fall over.

The winner is the player who manages to remove and place the last piece on top without it falling over. What I love about this is that instead of the usual blocks that you remove it's actually bone shapes that make up the pieces. It's a simply change that is such a great idea.

Get stacking from Amazon UK, Amazon US and Beaumonde.

Picture
Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins is a fun, quick game for ages 6 and up. In the game you have to create 3 piles of cards, each round the player places a card onto a pile and each player continues to do so until all three cards have the same matching symbol. If all three cards reveal the same symbol then its a smash! The player who manages to get rid of all of their cards first is the winner.

Each card has spooky and pumpkin themed images like Pumpkin Spiced Lattes and Jack'o Lanterns, which makes this game even more fun. Oh and it's all house in a Pumpkin box!

Grab your own Smashing Pumpkins game from Amazon UK, Menkind, John Lewis and Zatu.

Picture
Ouija

Ouija was originally created in 1894 and has long been associated with the dead. Using the Planchette you can use the board to speak with the dead and ask questions. If the planchette begins to move by itself then you'll be getting answers whether you like them or not... or so they say.

Believed by many to actually work and many who think its all false, this is one board game you can easily play at home but for this one i'm not including any links.

No one said anything about social distancing from the dead now did they?

Ten Buffy The Vampire Slayer Facts To Celebrate 23 Years of The Chosen One

3/10/2020

Picture
It's been 23 years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer first started kicking butt on our tv screens and although I now feel very old knowing this, Buffy is still as fangtastic (I couldn't resist) as ever.

To celebrate 23 years of the Chosen One here is ten fun facts about the worlds best Vampire Slayer.

10 - Charisma Carpenter who played Cordelia was originally up for the role of Buffy. As Sarah Michelle Geller was rising in popularity due to films like Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer, the producers insister Gellar was the star of the show and so a switch was made.

9 - In the original pilot episode Willow was actually played by Riff Regan and not Alyson Hannigan. When the show was picked up, the plans to replace Regan were already in place. They wanted someone who was naturally a little quirky and Alyson Hannigan fit the role perfect. Poor Riff :(

8 - Dawn was originally planned to have powers of her own but these were later dropped. If they had been kept she would have been able to talk to the dead and also move things with her mind.
Picture
7 - A spin off with Faith as the main character was also planned but when the show ended Eliza Dushku wanted to pursue other roles instead and so it ended there. Although a Angel and Faith spin off comic series was released after the season 8 comic.

6 - The decision to have the vampires turn to dust was to make the show a little easier. Instead of the gang jumping over bodies and also having to clean up after every fight, the decision was made to have them turn to dust. It also cost $5000 in cgi costs each time too.

5 - In the episode Hush The Gentlemen steal the voices of everyone in Sunnydale and as creepy as that episode is, it actually happened because of a dream Joss Whedon had. In the dream the gentlemen slowly floated towards him while he was in bed. Doug Jones who also played Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus was played one of them in the episode.

4 - The ending of season five was foreshadowed in season 3. Graduation Day Part 2 sees Faith tell Buffy "Miles to go, little Miss Muffet counting down from 7 3 0" in a dream sequence. Later in Season 5, episode 2 we see Dawn walking to the Magic Shop when one of the people Gloria turned insane says "I know you, curds and whey... I know what you are". Little Miss Muffet ate curds and whey in the original nursery rhyme. Dawn is Miss Muffet and from Buffys graduation it's exactly 730 days until Season Five, Episode 22. Which as we all know is 'The Gift'.

3 - In scenes where Angel and Buffy would kiss, Gellar and David Boreanaz would purposely eat bad foods like pickles and tuna to ensure their breath smelt as a small joke to each other.

2 - When a show is running for 7 seasons you would think letting the cast know it would end with season 7 would be a priority... unfortunately not. Sarah Michelle Gellar actually revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2003 that the show would end with season 7. Almost all of the cast and crew didn't know this and either read about it from EW or were told by friends or family who had read it.
Picture
Picture
1 - With that being said Buffy was originally planned to end with season 5. It was written and filmed to be the very final episode and although an extremely sad one at that, it did continue. The WB had not renewed the show for a 6th season and with no guarantee it would be picked up by another network the cast and crew had made it so it ended with... well an ending. When UPN picked it up, the show continued for another 2 seasons and thankfully it ended with Buffy not dying after all.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer stars reunite for 20th Anniversary

3/29/2017

Picture
The most famous slayer of them all, along with her scoobie gang reunited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of such an amazing show.

The get-together was all thanks to Entertainment Weekly who managed to get the cast together to speak about the show, their current projects, what they've been up to over the last 20 years and what Buffy meant to them.

The reunion sees all the main cast (minus Anthony Stewart Head) reunite and discuss the show along with a photoshoot for the magazine which goes on sale this Friday (March 31st). As expected they all still look as good as they did when the show started 20 years ago.

You can check out a short video of the reunion below along with the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly. A total of 4 different Buffy 20th anniversary covers will be available.
